Your Career Forecast: June/ July 2016

Ellen Fondiler | Your Career Forecast for Cancer: June / July 2016

I work as a career and business strategist. But my secret passion is… astrology!

About once a month,  I post an overview of what’s happening in the cosmos and how it might influence your career. It’s called: Your Career Forecast.

Whether you’re job-hunting, running your own business, or wondering about the ideal time to ask for a raise or take a vacation, each Career Forecast will reveal the important dates and cosmic shifts that you need to know about.

I am joined by my dear friend, Heidi Rose Robbins, a master astrologer who will provide expert insight into what’s going on in the stars.

Let’s dive in!

OVERVIEW

What’s going on this month…

HEIDI: The Sun moves into Cancer on June 20th, 2016 at 3:34pm Pacific Time.

Cancer is a sign of great care and compassion. The month of Cancer is a time of nourishment, nesting and re-building—a powerful “gestation time.” After the flurry of Gemini, Cancer is a time for quiet productivity, and for feeling things fully and deeply. Wrap your arms around what you love most. Don’t be afraid to feel your feelings, even if they seem unusually intense. Emotions are your friend—and your source of power—during the time of Cancer.

On June 29th, the planet Mercury also moves into Cancer. Again, decisions will be driven by emotions and intuition rather than pure logic. During this time, let yourself “feel” your way forward rather than relying on a linear, tick-all-the-boxes approach.

That same day, June 29th, the planet Mars (which has been retrograde) goes direct. If you’ve been feeling stalled or stuck, Mars can unglue things and get projects moving forward again. This is a time for focused action. Your invitation: become a warrior for what matters most. Right foot. Left foot. Forward. March!

July 4th brings a New Moon in Cancer, which is always a potent time for making new wishes and planting new seeds. What do you want to bring forth? What needs to be born? What do you want to tend to and nourish? This is a day to invest in your future—to plant the seeds that will nourish you in the weeks and months to come.

Also, pay attention on July 11th when Venus moves into Leo—and then two days later, on July 13th, Mercury also moves into this fiery sign. This is a time of courageous self-expression. Whatever you’ve been brewing on and quietly building during the first couple weeks of Cancer now has an opportunity to be creatively expressed. Leo is also a great sign of leadership. Dare to take the spotlight!

On July 16th—when Mercury and Venus sit in the same degree of Leo—there’s an air of enhanced eloquence and leadership. Communication during this time has tremendous magnetism. (Podcast recording, open mic night, or TEDx Talk, anyone?)

Finally, the Full Moon of Cancer lands on July 19th, in the sign of Capricorn. It’s a very potent time to turn within, assess the past weeks, and celebrate your achievements—both personal and professional. Take a few moments to bask in the full moon light. On the night of the Full Moon, imagine yourself as a lighted house, ready to open your windows and doors to friends and allies, willing to beam your light to all who need it most.

JOB-HUNTING?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: As Heidi mentioned, Cancer is a time when emotions reign supreme—it’s all about feelings, feelings, feelings!

If you send out your résumé—but don’t get an enthusiastic response—the disappointment might feel especially intense during this month. Be aware of that and try to be extra-compassionate with yourself.

But don’t use Cancer-time as an excuse to just wallow and mope all month long. Instead, try use your feelings as “fuel” to create what you want.

For example, if you’re feeling frustrated because you’ve sent your cover letter and résumé to a dozen companies and not one single place has responded, then allow yourself to really feel that frustration! Let that frustration motivate you to improve your job-hunting materials, to find a mentor, or hire a coach, to network more vigorously, and really kick things up a notch. As Heidi pointed out, this is a time when your feelings (both positive and negative) can be a source of great power and productivity.

Heidi also mentioned that on June 29th, the planet Mars (which has been retrograde) goes direct. Think of this like a cosmic light switch flipping from “off” to “on.” Things have been somewhat quiet for a few weeks (maybe you’ve been cruising the Internet and working quietly in your darkened bedroom on your laptop), but now, bam! Quiet time is over. Lights are back on. No more stalling. It’s time to get out of the house and take action in a more “public” way.

If you are job-hunting, this means that—starting around June 29th—you might feel a surge of fresh energy. Ride that wave of energy and connect, connect, connect! Reach out to old colleagues to see how they’re doing and where they are working. Find new contacts on LinkedIn. Go on sites like The Muse, read about interesting companies, and make a list of places you’d like to learn more about.

In Greek mythology, Mars is the God of war. At the end of June, imagine yourself like a warrior marching towards victory. Choose your battle plan and march, march, march.

In my coaching program—GO GET IT!—we continually reinforce the importance of taking small steps, every day, for multiple weeks in a row. That’s how real progress gets made. Every email you send, every lunch date that you set up, every conversation with your career coach or mentor or social media contacts—all of those actions add up and propel your job hunt forward.

ALREADY HAVE A JOB?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: If you’re employed and you love your current job, June / July would be an excellent time to step into more of a leadership role.

This doesn’t always mean going after a promotion, although it certainly could! There are many ways to establish yourself as a “leader” in the workplace, regardless of your current job title. You could ask your boss to entrust you with a high-profile project and more responsibility. You could spearhead a campaign to recruit more women into your male-dominated department. You could volunteer to lead an important meeting—or to mentor a new hire or intern. Step up to the plate. Seize initiative. Lead on! With both Venus and Mercury in Leo, your communication skills will be enhanced. Plus with the sun in Cancer, you’ll be able to communicate with extra empathy and compassion.

If you’re employed but you’re not that “into” your current job, the Cancer Full Moon on July 19th is an ideal moment to turn within, reflect, assess, and figure out your next steps. This could be the perfect time to sign up for a workshop or conference that will expose you to new ideas, new people, new companies—all kinds of fresh career possibilities that you hadn’t considered. Check out Wisdom 2.0, 99U and the World Domination Summit. Or if you are itching to do something creative—like write a book—sign up for one of Alex Franzen’s workshops. The beauty of attending a workshop or conference is that you never know who you’re going to meet. You might be sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with your new best friend, or your next colleague or boss!

SELF-EMPLOYED OR RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: The New Moon in Cancer happens on July 4th—which is perfect timing for those of us based here in the United States. July 4th is typically a day we spend with family and friends, celebrating our hard-fought freedoms and the joy of being together (this is Cancer at its best!)

New Moons are all about “planting seeds” for the future. On July 4th, gather with friends and talk about your dreams and wishes for the coming months. If you’re eager to get more clients, say so. If you’re ready to expand your business team and hire a fabulous assistant, say so. Plant little “seeds” in people’s minds so that they’re thinking about you in the months to come. Who knows? One of your closest friends might have an idea—or connection, or referral—that allows your New Moon wish to come true.

Also, since it’s a New Moon on the 4th, the sky will be completely dark. The fireworks will be amazing! Enjoy!

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

June 20th – The Sun moves into Cancer (introspection, quiet productivity, intense feelings and emotions)

June 29th – Mars goes direct and Mercury moves into Cancer (quiet time is over! time for public action, shift into warrior-mode)

July 4th – New Moon in Cancer (share new dreams and wishes out loud with friends, plant seeds for the future)

July 11th – Venus moves into Leo (take on a new leadership role!)

July 13th – Mercury moves into Leo (communication is enhanced)

July 16th – Venus and Mercury conjunct in Leo (be daring, seize the spotlight, leadership and communication continue to be enhanced!)

July 19th – Full Moon in Capricorn (celebrate, reflect, assess, figure out where you’re heading next, “feel” your way forward, let emotions be your guide…)

YOUR CAREER MANTRA FOR THIS MONTH:

“It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.” —Muhammed Ali

If there is a metaphorical “pebble in your shoe” this month—something that is irritating you, frustrating you, or weighing you down—be honest with yourself (“This sucks!”) and then do something to change the situation.

You’ve got big work ahead—you can’t afford to be bogged down by pebbles pricking your feet! Let your emotions be like a piercing, bright light of truth. Let your emotions motivate you to clean up old messes, make positive changes, and really put forth your best effort. That’s the power of Cancer. Use it to your advantage.

Remember: no matter what is going on in the cosmos, ultimately, you are the master of your own destiny. You are always in charge. There is always a way to make progress with your goals and to create the life and career that you want.

Every door can be unlocked.

Have an amazing month!

UNLOCKED STORIES: Bernadette Murphy, Risk Taker, Explorer, Memoirist, Motorcyclist

ELLEN FONDILER | UNLOCKED STORIES: Bernadette Murphy, Risk Taker, Explorer, Memoirist, Motorcyclist

To do the work you love, you’ve got to unlock a few doors. UNLOCKED Stories are honest conversations with people who chose a path and made it happen.

A note from Ellen:

At age forty-eight, Bernadette Murphy decided to learn how to ride a motorcycle. It was a pretty bold choice for a “settled wife” with three kids. But she went for it—and the experience transformed her life forever.

If you’ve ever felt like it’s “too late” for you to learn a new skill—or transform your life and career—because you’re too old, or you don’t have the right connections, or you don’t have enough money, or it just feels too scary, I urge you to read this interview with Bernadette.

Her story proves: it’s never too late to step away from what’s “predictable” and pursue what you honestly want.

ELLEN FONDILER | UNLOCKED STORIES: Bernadette Murphy, Risk Taker, Explorer, Memoirist, Motorcyclist

What do you do?

[Bernadette]: I write—mostly essays and books, including memoir and narrative nonfiction.

Harley and Me: Embracing Risk on the Road to a More Authentic Life is my most recent book, published in May 2016. It combines memoir with research into the neuroscience/psychology of risk taking to answer the question: “What happens when women in midlife step out of what’s predictable?”

For me, learning to ride a motorcycle at forty-eight became the catalyst that transformed me from a settled wife and professor with three teenage children into a woman on my own. The confidence I gained from mastering the motorcycle gave me the courage to face deeper issues in my life and start taking risks. It’s a fact that men and women alike become more risk averse in our later years—which according to psychologists and neuroscience is exactly what we should not do.

My bestselling book, Zen and the Art of Knitting, looked into the metaphysics of fiber art through a combination of memoir and reportage.

It’s kind of a weird oeuvre: knitting to motorcycles, but it’s what I do.

In addition to writing books, I am also professor of creative writing, working with graduate students at Antioch University Los Angeles, and a writing coach/editor in private practice.

What were you doing before you became a motorcycle-riding memoirist?

[Bernadette]: I’ve always been a writer, though in my younger years I used my writing skills as a journalist and a public relations/advertising copywriter.

It wasn’t until I was in my 30s that I began to recognize the stories I had to tell—those tales that plumb the human condition and hopefully make readers feel less alone.

Once I realized I had these stories, the inner pressure to tell them well began to build. I went back to graduate school at that point—as a mother of three small children—and started on this path of being a full-time author, writing stories that mattered to me.

What is your favorite part about your work?

[Bernadette]: When I’m on a roll with my writing, and time disappears, and a project that seemed a mess yesterday starts to shift and change and find its own shape right before my eyes—that’s my favorite part. It’s like watching magic happen.

I’m aware that the magic can’t happen if I don’t show up to do the work, or if I just wait for inspiration to strike, or if I refuse to make my way through those painful moments when everything I write sucks and I wonder if I have any clue about what I’m doing. But if I persevere through those times and simply keep going, eventually: magic.

I also love working with students and emerging writers as they begin to find and focus their own voice, and watching that same magic happen for them.

What is your least favorite part about your work?

[Bernadette]: I’m not a fan of the book tour/publicity stage. Right now, I’m learning to master social media stuff and I have to be in the public eye more than I’m comfortable with. It’s one thing for my stories to be out there. It’s another when I have to bring my physical self into the spotlight. That exposure makes me squirm.

How do you typically begin your day?

[Bernadette]: Before I’m fully awake, I feed Gates, my fox terrier rescue dog, walk him, and then settle down for 20 minutes of meditation. Once I’ve centered myself that way, then coffee, email, and writing are next.

When you’re having a difficult or stressful day, how do you get through it?

[Bernadette]: Sometimes I just walk away. I get up from the computer and take Gates for a walk in the park next door to break up the day and get a fresh start. Or I take a bath. Or go for a massage if I can fit it in. Another session of mediation always helps. Anything to interrupt the negative momentum that has started rolling.

ELLEN FONDILER | UNLOCKED STORIES: Bernadette Murphy, Risk Taker, Explorer, Memoirist, Motorcyclist

What has been the most challenging chapter of your career so far? (A roadblock, setback, or “locked door” moment?)

[Bernadette]: There have been a lot of them—too many to list here! Being a writer, I think, is a huge lesson in being knocked down and getting back up. Over and over and over again.

Here’s one example: two years ago, I moved to the island of Mo’orea in French Polynesia on sabbatical from my teaching job to finish Harley and Me. While there, I sent the third fully revised 90-page proposal to my literary agent, and I was sure I had finally nailed it. She wrote back, not at all happy with the proposal and making it clear that we didn’t see eye-to-eye on this project.

Unlike my three previous books, which she sold based on rather short and easily created proposals, this one was taking so much more work. I wasn’t sure if she was wrong or I was wrong or what do to next. I was utterly adrift—and so depressed I could hardly move. Here I was in paradise to do this one thing, and now I was no longer sure that I could do it.

How did you get through that “locked door” moment?

[Bernadette]: I spent the next few days in a state of complete surrender. Maybe I needed to give up the agent, with whom I’d had a longstanding work relationship and who was a heavy hitter in the book world. Maybe I needed to give up this particular book project. Maybe my writing career had run its course and was coming to an end. I had to be willing to let go of everything and completely surrender to any and all of these possibilities.

When I quit fighting for things to be the way I demanded them to be, a new, better version of the book began to take shape. I found I could do exactly what I wanted to do with this project and meet my agent’s suggestions as well. Her suggestions, in fact, greatly strengthened the work. But when I first received them, I couldn’t see that possible outcome. I was too afraid of the challenge she had put before me and hadn’t yet learned to trust that I could do it. It was easier to think she was wrong and didn’t understand my project than to see that what she was suggesting was a good and necessary thing.

It’s obvious that you’re so passionate about writing—but do you ever fantasize about having a totally different career? What would it be?

[Bernadette]: Yes and no. I really think I have the best career possible for me. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But I’d love to have a few other careers in addition to my writing. I’d love to be an outdoor adventure guide, a musician, a Ranger in a National Park, an athlete, a coach. The list goes on and on.

Who are your personal heroes and role models?

[Bernadette]: The women who have showed me how to do this thing called “life.”

I raised three kids, but I did so having no role model. My mother was seriously mentally ill and institutionalized during much of my childhood. When I become a mother myself, other women in my life stepped up to show me how to do it.

Women writers, likewise, have been my biggest supporters, reading drafts of my work, putting me in touch with people who may help my career, holding me accountable for what I say I’m going to do, and cheering me on from the sidelines.

What’s the next door that you need to unlock? (And what’s the plan?)

[Bernadette]: I’m working on a novel now that I started some 18 years ago. It’s very close to the bone for me and I’ve completed at least five drafts of it that failed to satisfy me.

I’m going to try it once again, but this time the plan is to nail it once and for all or cut it loose. To do so, I’m making a specific, month-by-month work schedule that I will ask a writing friend to hold me accountable to.

This time, either the novel works or it doesn’t, but I have decided that after this attempt, I can’t keep dragging this albatross behind me any longer. I’m like a sailboat with my sail set just right into the wind, ready to move forward, and this book has become an anchor I’m dragging behind me. I need to take this one last attempt and then be done with it.

I’m wishing you smooth sailing with that project! Last but not least: what’s your biggest piece of advice for anyone who wants to do amazing work in the world, stay motivated, and unlock major doors?

[Bernadette]: Will power is great, but a plan is better.

Learn to prize what’s important in life rather than what’s urgent. There will always be urgent things trying to get your attention and pull you away from what you truly value—laundry, dishes, the needs of others. Our culture values us when we take care of all those urgent things, when we’re productive that way. But if we only do what’s urgent, we’ll never get to focus on what’s truly important to us.

Don’t be afraid to make a mess or to fail, even publicly. Every failure I have walked through has taken me one step closer to the next success. When I play it safe and try to avoid messes and failure, I miss the success that might have been birthed through the failure.

People are quick to warn you about all the lurking perils if you take risky options. But no one tells you about the death that occurs, slowly, like the frog swimming in a pot of increasingly heated water, if you don’t put your true self on the line. We only get one go-around at this rodeo (to the best of my knowledge). I want to be fully alive and fully me in the time I have on this planet.

UNLOCK YOURSELF

Three questions to think about, write about—or talk about with a friend.

1. Bernadette hopped onto a motorcycle at age forty-eight and her life changed forever—in very surprising ways.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do (ride a Harley, visit Bali, take a drawing class, run a 5K, etc) that you’ve been postponing? What’s stopping you?

2. While preparing to write her latest book, Harley and Me, Bernadette experienced a period of overwhelm, stuckness, and depression, and temporarily wondered if she should even continue writing at all.

Do you ever feel like “walking away” from your entire career? Do those feelings come often? Or just occasionally? What do you say to yourself in those moments? What helps you?

3. Bernadette loves when she feels “on a roll” with her writing—in the zone, in that trance-like flow-state where time seems to disappear.

When do you feel “in the zone”? Can you remember the last time that you felt so immersed in a project that you barely noticed time passing? What were you doing? What was happening?

Ask Ellen: How Can I Stay Positive? I’m Looking For A Sign.

Dear Ellen,

I recently relocated to a new city—my husband got a job there—and I have to admit that I am really struggling. I miss my old friends. I’ve been job hunting without much success (sent out over ten resumes, not one response). On top of everything else, I just got a scary health diagnosis (one of those “lumps” that you never want to discover). I might be going into surgery soon.

I don’t know the “point” of this question, exactly, except to ask… do you have any words of advice for me? I am usually a very positive person, but this past year has left me completely exhausted. I’m just so tired. I feel like I need some kind of message or miracle to lift my spirits again.

Looking For A Sign

ASK ELLEN

Dear Looking For A Sign,

My heart goes out to you. Moving, being unemployed, feeling disconnected from your community, and dealing with health issues on top of everything else—that’s a huge amount of stress all swirling around at once—and I’m not surprised you feel exhausted! Who wouldn’t? You’re only human, after all.

You say that you need some kind of “sign” or “message” to lift your spirits again. I can understand that feeling. Sometimes, you just need a little flicker of hope to remind you that there is so much beauty in the world. Other times, you just need a change of perspective.

One thing I’ve learned from my darkest moments—losing my first child, getting divorced, and during periodic business struggles that ebb and flow through the decades—is that even the most painful experiences always carry an opportunity for joy. It sounds very cliché, but it’s true: there’s always a “silver lining.”

Unemployed? That means you probably have an unusual amount of free time on your hands. Time that you could use connect with new (and old) friends in a meaningful way—take up letter writing, become pen pals, invite them to visit your new city for a spontaneous get-together, schedule a webcam video-date and have dinner together (despite being far away from one another), and so on.

Unwell? That means you need to slow down and rest so that you can heal. Here’s your opportunity to finally savor all those classic novels you never got around to reading. Here’s your chance to invite family to be with you at your bedside, to share stories you’ve never heard before, to rub your feet and hold your hand, and connect in an even deeper way.

As the American Buddhist nun and Zen scholar, Pema Chodron, has said:

“…feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we’re holding back. They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we’d rather collapse and back away. They’re like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we’re stuck. This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it’s with us wherever we are.”

I’m not saying that what you’re going through is “fun.” It’s absolutely not. But there’s always an opportunity for joy buried in every struggle—a flip side, a surprise gift, a silver lining. It’s not always obvious or easy to spot, but it’s there.

I know you can find yours.

Find great work. Do great work. Unlock every door in your way.

Your Career Forecast: May / June 2016

Ellen Fondiler | Your Career Forecast for Gemini: May - June 2016

I work as a career and business strategist. But my secret passion is… astrology!

Once a month, starting this month, I’ll post an overview of what’s happening in the cosmos and how it might influence your career.

HEIDI: The Sun moves into Gemini on May 20th, 2016. We are moving into a time of great connectivity! This is a time to build relationships and embrace networking.

Gemini rules communication: what we think, speak and write. This is the time get your message out! Gemini is a masculine sign and one of great flexibility and movement. With the Sun in Gemini, you’ll do what it takes—even if it means spinning 10 plates simultaneously—to build the bridges you need to build.

Also, Mercury goes direct on May 22nd. Mercury is retrograde through the first 3 weeks of May but on the 22nd, the energy begins to move outward and forward again. When Mercury is retrograde, we review the past 4 months. When it goes direct, we act upon what we have learned. We make plans, talk about them and execute them. Dust yourself off: it’s action time!

Mars will shift into Scorpio on May 27th. This brings intensity and tenacity. When Mars is in Scorpio, we have to be careful of reactivity and aggression, but it also provides great strength and conviction. We dive in and commit with Mars in Scorpio. We see the battle through.

Finally, there’s a New Moon on June 4th! The New Moon time is the moment to plant seeds, begin new endeavors and cultivate new thoughts. It will give you a breath of springtime optimism and potential.

When you work harmoniously with these energies, much beauty and goodness can transpire. Enjoy the dance!

JOB-HUNTING?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: As Heidi mentioned, the Sun is moving into Gemini on May 20th, which means if you are job-hunting, this is a terrific time to reach out to people in your network (friends, family, colleagues, etc.) and make a clear declaration that you’re looking for a new job. This is not the time to be secretive and shy. Speak up. Don’t hold back!

Reach out to your LinkedIn contacts. Set up coffee dates. Swing by a neighbor’s dinner party—or throw a party yourself. Send emails to teachers, mentors, acquaintances, anyone who might be able to open doors for you. (Don’t know how to write a memorable email? Use Alexandra Franzen’s Feel. Know. Do. technique. It’s a game changer.)

Bottom line: make sure everyone in your community knows what type of position you’re seeking. Nurture your existing relationships and work your connections. You just never know: your yoga teacher’s husband’s sister might be the hiring manager at your dream company! Start spreading the word about your job hunt, tell everyone about it, and see where it leads.

ALREADY HAVE A JOB?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: If you love your current job, this would be an excellent time review all of the projects on your desk and get organized for the next 3-4 months. Round up your team. Review the plan. Get everyone on the same page. As Heidi said, Gemini is all about communication—so this is a good time to write a company-wide manifesto, if you don’t already have one, and/or review responsibilities to make sure everyone clearly understands their role in the department.

If you’re employed but you’re not that “into” your current job, great news: when Mercury goes direct on May 22nd, any “action” that you take to step into the next chapter of your career will be multiplied and enhanced. Take those “Should I do something different?” thoughts that have been ruminating inside your brain and start making things happen! Start that new project, blog, or side-business that you’ve been thinking about. At the very least, take one baby step forward. With the New Moon on June 4th, this is absolutely the time to plant new seeds and see what grows.

SELF-EMPLOYED OR RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

Here’s what you need to know…

ELLEN: Remember when Heidi said that Mars shifts into Scorpio on May 27th? This creates a time of heightened aggression and intensity. You might find yourself feeling unusually hot-tempered and reactive. Watch yourself! If a client is late paying an invoice, if an employee shows up late for a shift, or if a customer makes an annoying request, resist the urge to lash out.

Instead, try to channel all that extra “heat” into your business projects and goals—or burn it off with a few extra workouts at the gym—rather that letting the intensity boil over in unproductive ways. Think before acting—and pick your battles.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

May 20th – The Sun Moves into Gemini (great time for connecting and networking)
May 22nd – Mercury goes direct (boom! action time!)
May 27th – Mars moves into Scorpio (heat, intensity, conviction)
June 4th – New Moon in Gemini (plant new seeds, make new wishes)

YOUR CAREER MANTRA FOR THIS MONTH:

“People say, ‘What is the sense of our small effort?’ They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time. Take one step at a time.” —Dorothy Day

Remember: no matter what is going on in the cosmos, ultimately, you are the master of your own destiny. You are always in charge. There is always a way to make progress with your goals and to create the life and career that you want.

Every door can be unlocked.

Have an amazing month!
